My Journey to Find Purpose Through Hundreds of Letters to Strangers
Author: Hannah Brencher
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
Category: Biography & Autobiography
A heartwarming memoir of love and faith from Hannah Brencher—founder of The World Needs More Love Letters—who has dedicated her life to showing total strangers that they are not alone in the world. Fresh out of college, Hannah Brencher moved to New York ready to change the world. Instead, she found a city full of people who knew where they were going and what they were doing and didn’t have time for a girl still trying to figure it all out. Lonely and depressed, she noticed a woman who looked like she felt the same way on the subway. Hannah did something strange—she wrote the woman a letter. She folded it, scribbled “If you find this letter, it’s for you…” on the front and left it behind. When she realized that it made her feel better, she started writing and leaving love notes all over the city—in doctor’s offices, in coat pockets, in library books, in bathroom stalls. Feeling crushed within a culture that only felt like connecting on a screen, she poured her heart out to complete strangers. She found solace in the idea that her words might brighten someone’s day. Hannah’s project took on a life of its own when she made an offer on her blog: She would handwrite a note and mail it to anyone who wanted one. Overnight, her inbox exploded with requests from people all over the world. Nearly 400 handwritten letters later, she started the website, The World Needs More Love Letters, which quickly grew. There is something about receiving a handwritten note that is so powerful in today’s digital era. If You Find This Letter chronicles Hannah’s attempts to bring more love into the world—and shows how she rediscovered her faith through the movement she started.
Twenty-Ninth Report of Session 2010-11; Report, Together with Formal Minutes, Oral and Written Evidence
Author: Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Committee of Public Accounts
Publisher: The Stationery Office
This report examines the management of the contract with Siemens and the BBC's in-house development of the Digital Media Initiative Programme. The Programme is designed to transform the way in which BBC staff create, use and share video and audio material. It involves the development of new technology to allow staff to manage content efficiently on their desktops, in order to give greater accessibility of digital content for audiences on TV, online and radio. The BBC has made good progress in delivering the programme in-house since it terminated its contract with Siemens. It is now on course to deliver the complete technology by summer 2011. With hindsight, the BBC should not have let the contract for its Digital Media Initiative to Siemens without testing the contractor against other suppliers, especially as there was a high degree of innovation involved. The Programme is no longer expected to deliver the overall net financial benefit of £17.9 million originally anticipated. The BBC approved the Programme on the basis that it would cost £81.7 million and deliver benefits of £99.6 million, but now forecasts costs of £133.6 million and benefits of £95.4 million - a net cost of £38.2 million. The Committee welcomes the Trust's assurance that it would now take a more challenging approach when considering procurements but are concerned with the ease with which the BBC found over £50 million in savings to make up for the losses it suffered through late delivery of the project and its own increased delivery costs. This suggests the need for a more vigilant approach to value for money.

A Novel of the Near Future
Author: John Scalzi
A blazingly inventive near-future thriller from the best-selling, Hugo Award-winning John Scalzi. Not too long from today, a new, highly contagious virus makes its way across the globe. Most who get sick experience nothing worse than flu, fever and headaches. But for the unlucky one percent - and nearly five million souls in the United States alone - the disease causes "Lock In": Victims fully awake and aware, but unable to move or respond to stimulus. The disease affects young, old, rich, poor, people of every color and creed. The world changes to meet the challenge. A quarter of a century later, in a world shaped by what's now known as "Haden's syndrome," rookie FBI agent Chris Shane is paired with veteran agent Leslie Vann. The two of them are assigned what appears to be a Haden-related murder at the Watergate Hotel, with a suspect who is an "integrator" - someone who can let the locked in borrow their bodies for a time. If the Integrator was carrying a Haden client, then naming the suspect for the murder becomes that much more complicated. But "complicated" doesn't begin to describe it. As Shane and Vann began to unravel the threads of the murder, it becomes clear that the real mystery - and the real crime - is bigger than anyone could have imagined. The world of the locked in is changing, and with the change comes opportunities that the ambitious will seize at any cost. The investigation that began as a murder case takes Shane and Vann from the halls of corporate power to the virtual spaces of the locked in, and to the very heart of an emerging, surprising new human culture. It's nothing you could have expected. How to supercharge your natural kick-ass motivation and hunt down that Great Life!
Author: Laura Tong,Mark Tong
Publisher: Laura Tong
Do you dream of doing something awesome, big or small towards a Great Life, anything indeed, but when you try to motivate yourself into actually getting off your burgeoning ass and taking some kick-ass action, nothing happens, zilch? Somehow, for some damn reason you can't identify, your motivation always fails to show up for the party? Goes AWOL? There's a strong chance it's never your true dream you're chasing, but some swindling parasitic desire foisted on you - in short, you've been swindled, you're a casualty of The Great Motivation Swindle. Too many great people are failing to achieve the success and Great Life they could be living and it seems to be assumed that this is a natural state of affairs and there is little that can be done about it. So what do you do if you find it harder to get motivated than a shark at a salad bar? If you're feeling more demotivated than an albino in a heatwave? What happens is you turn to self-improvement. But the killer is that this industry is largely just putting out the same swindling message as society, more and more dressed up in pseudo 'science' and psychological jargon. The mountains of motivational literature, images and quotes that are designed to get you fired up enough to get going and kick some ass, are in fact doing the oh so opposite: rather than motivating ordinary people to get out there and chase down some sweet dream, they are demotivating them or worse still, encouraging the swindleous practice of substituting some other bastard's aims and desires for yours. So what's the alternative? The alternative is a Revolution. A Revolution for the Common Man. A Revolution where you buck the swindle and the whole concept of 'self-improvement', replace all the corrosive crap in your head with your own unique desire and motivation to pursue your own happiness and go grab whatever the hell you want, as you. The book also includes 19 Motivational Rules for the Common Man

Why the Church Must Change the Way It Views Evangelism
Author: Gary Comer
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
What if we changed the face of evangelism? In a time when so many have a negative perception of evangelism, what if a new model was entirely biblical, loaded with skills, and more effective? Soul Whisperer shifts the emphasis from telling to a drawing paradigm. It develops biblically the pattern of Jesus, who did not give static presentations but rather customized his words to each hearer. By learning his ways, our words, too, can have pinpointed impact! Christians will discover how to draw out first, in order to read their friends and discern the relevant appeal of the gospel. In this way, the style is far more dynamic. It adapts! Understanding the non-believer's unique starting point will determine a distinct path. By creating a conversation about spiritual influence and what is involved in faith formation, this book charts ways for Christians to go deeper in evangelistic relationships. Most importantly, Soul Whisperer infuses skills that will shape a more Christ-likened missional disciple.
