The book describes in-depth qualitative interviewing from the very beginning to last step, from its underlying philosophy and assumptions to project design, analysis and write up. In responsive interviewing, the stages of research-design, data gathering, and analysis-are intimately linked. Researchers perform analysis throughout their projects, not just at the end, so that as they learn more, they can modify both the research problem they are exploring and the questions they ask. The book assumes no prior knowledge or experience, and the authors' tone is conversational, revealing that interviewers can make mistakes, recover from them and still obtain rich and meaningful information.
Qualitative Interviewing, Second Edition has been totally rewritten to add new examples and to better integrate the presentation of topics. Tourism in China has grown rapidly since the country started implementing its open-door policy in 1978. Tourism development is now an essential agenda item for the Chinese government's plan for economic & social growth. Policy and policy-making for tourism therefore provides the essential background to understand tourism development in China. This is the first book to set the development of tourism in China since 1949 in its policy context. Underpinned by a strong conceptual framework, this systematic study of China contributes to an in-depth understanding of how public policy-making for tourism works and how it affects the development of tourism in the real world. From invisible to visible: Stories of Taiwanese Hakka heritage teachers journeys is a study exploring teachers views and experiences with Hakka heritage language education and instruction in Taiwan. These teachers are involved in Taiwans current heritage language program and also experienced the Mandarin Movement which started several decades ago. Data for this qualitative study was collected from interviews with 10 Hakka teachers involved in Hakka heritage language instruction in elementary schools in Taiwan. The research findings indicate that the heritage language program reinforces the value of Hakka culture and Hakka identity. In addition, this study shows that the Mandarin Movement demonstrated the elementary schools important role in the cultivation of students language use habits and perceptions toward the various Taiwanese languages.
This book is the result of more than a decade's preoccupation with the issue of compliance in the Barents Sea fisheries, first as an interpreter in the Norwegian Coast Guard, then as a graduate student at the University of Troms0, and finally, as a PhD student at the University of Oslo and a research fellow at the FridtjofNansen Institute (FNI). Many of those who deserve a "thank you" in this preface have already been properly thanked on other occasions, among them my previous colleagues and superiors in the Norwegian Coast Guard.
